Pathankot terror attack martyr Kulwant Singh's younger brother and his wife were allegedly thrashed and beaten up by a travel agent and his accomplices in their village in Gurdaspur.

The incident took place on May 13, but the CCTV footage of the incident went viral on the social media. The footage shows three persons, including two women thrashing Hardip Singh's wife Kulwinder Kaur in a shop where they had stopped to recharge their phone. The two women dragged her outside the shop and started beating her in daylight, until onlookers intervened. The couple was taken to the hospital, from where they were discharged after primary treatment.

The accused were identified as a travel agent, Gurnam Singh, his wife and other family members.

The police said that Hardip Singh had given Rs 9 lakh to the travel agent for sending him to the US in 2015. After he failed to send Hardeep abroad, the family demanded that the money be returned. He returned Rs 3.4 lakh while deducting Rs 1.6 lakh towards expenses and signed an affidavit promising to refund Rs 4 lakh in due course.

However, Gurnam kept dilly-dallying and made one excuse after another for not returning the money, when Hardeep took the complaint to village sarpanch. This led to a heated argument between the two after which Hardip decided to report the matter to police.

"The incident took place when the couple was on their way to the police station to file the complaint. We have collected the CCTV footage and registered a case against Gurnam Singh, his wife and nine others under Section 323, 341, 354, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)," said Sub-Inspector Vijay Kumar from Bhaini Mian Khan Police Station in Gurdaspur. However, no arrest has been made as yet.

Hawaldar Kulwant Singh, 49, was among the seven security personnel killed when terrorists stormed the IAF base in Pathankot in January, 2016. A resident of Chak Sharif village in Gurdaspur, Singh had joined Defence Service Corps (DSC) after retirement from Army.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh took suo moto cognizance of the incident and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to initiate a thorough probe and ensure that the family is provided protection. "Such brazen lawlessness will not be tolerated, the Chief Minister said, directing the DGP to send a strong signal down the line to all policemen to be on their toes to ensure protection of the common citizens of the state.
