Amid ongoing controversy over the lathi-charge on students protesting against the eve-teasing, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice-Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi has reportedly pitched for appointing hospital head indicted for sexual harassment.

Several faculty appointments, including one of a teacher indicted for sexual harassment, were pushed by Tripathi, in the meeting of the Executive Council (EC), the highest decision-making body of the University, reported Indian Express

Tripathi is scheduled to retire on November 27. However, the move by comes even though the HRD Ministry order prohibits from making appointments in the last two months of the term.

A report said a member of the EC has objected a proposal to regularise OP Upadhyay’s appointment as Medical Superintendent of Sir Sunderlal Hospital, citing Upadhyay’s conviction for sexual harassment in a magistrate court in Fiji.

“A member pointed that instead of initiating an inquiry against the person concerned, the university is urging the EC to regularise his appointment,” an EC member told the daily.

“Appointments are a routine affair and I do not recall the decision regarding one specific appointment. Please wait for a day,” VC Tripathi said when asked if Upadhyay’s appointment was cleared.

In 2013, Upadhyay was held guilty of sexually harassing a 21-year-old woman by the magistrates court at Nasinu in Fiji. He has been acting as Medical Superintendent of Sir Sunderlal Hospital since April 2016.

However, Upadhyay said that the University had taken legal opinion in his matter and it was decided that the decision of a court abroad does not hold good in our country.

He also claimed that it was a case of extortion, but he was falsely accused when he was on a study tour in Fiji.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a lathi-charge by the police in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent.

Following the violence, the district administration declared holidays from Monday till October 2 in all colleges and universities in Varanasi. The BHU had earlier announced that the holidays would start from September 28.
