The nominations of candidates belonging to the two warring factions of the ruling AIADMK for April 12 RK Nagar byelection were accepted today.

The nomination of AIADMK (Amma) candidate TTV Dhinakaran, AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) nominee E Madhusudanan and DMK's N Maruthuganesh were among those that were accepted following scrutiny of the papers taken up today.

The nomination of J Deepa, niece of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, was also accepted, according to EC officials.

She is contesting from this city constituency as an Independent candidate.

Till reports last came, the authorities had accepted 61 nominations and rejected eight. A total of 127 persons had filed their nomination papers.

Bypoll to the constituency was necessitated due to the death of the sitting member Jayalalithaa in December last.

The two factions of AIADMK, one owing allegiance to jailed party General Secretary VK Sasikala and the other headed by expelled leader O Panneerselvam, staked claim for the party's Two Leaves symbol.

However, the EC had passed an order on Wednesday, freezing the Two Leaves symbol and asked the warring factions to choose different symbols and names.

Accordingly, AIADMK (Amma) is contesting on the Hat symbol while AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) had chosen Electric Pole.

The nominations of DMDK and CPI(M) candidates were also accepted.
