The case of 5-year-old child who was raped in Kandivali on Wednesday has been as brutal as the Nirbhaya case which shook the nation more than a year ago.

The survivor who lived on footpath with her mother and brother at Saibaba Nagar, was abducted at close to 3.00 am on Tuesday by the accused, who resided in the neighbourhood, police said.

She was raped in the most barbaric manner by inserting a sweeping broom inside the vagina, told doctors.

Later in the morning, the girl's mother discovered her crying in a bleeding state on the footpath and rushed her to BMC-run Kandivali Shatabdi Hospital. The accused however is still at large.

The survivor's condition having worsened severely, she was shifted to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central at around 11. 30 am on Wednesday.

A doctor from the forensic medicine department at Nair Hospital said, “A sweeping broom was inserted up till a length of one feet inside the girl's private parts. Her vagina and rectum were severely mutilated and she had lost a lot of blood. One unit of blood was transfused during the surgery.”

She was sedated and operated upon by paediatric surgeons. “When she was wheeled into the operation theatre, she was conscious but in tremendous pain. Her clothes were soaked in blood. The broom was removed from her vagina. The infected parts were cleaned and a colostomy was performed where an incision was made in her abdomen to facilitate the passing of stool and urine,” said a doctor from paediatric surgery.

Doctors said that her intestines were ruptured and will take over a month to heal. “She is not in a position to digest food and is on intravenous fluids at the moment,” added the doctor. The forensic medicine department has collected particulates and swabs from her body and have sent it to Kalina Forensic Laboratory for analysis.

The Kandivali police has registered a case of rape but has not made any arrests yet.

Confirming the brutality of incident, the police said that the accused is still at large. "We have scanned the CCTV footage of the area and identified the accused. The child's mother has informed us that he lives in the same area. He is however absconding," said Balsingh Rajput, DCP of Zone 11.

The police, while scanning the CCTV footage have found a man taking away the child. "We have formed teams to nab the accused. Her condition is believed to be stable," said Srikanth Mohite, police inspector, Kandivali Police Station.
