With a view to pre-empt the Modi government’s proposed Bill on triple talaq, pending approval from Rajya Sabha, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is redrafting the ‘model nikaahnama’ to add a new clause that the husband will never pronounce triple talaq during their marriage.

AIMPLB spokesperson Maulana Khalilulrehman Sajjad Nomani said it has been decided to add another line in the nikaahnama that the husband will give an undertaking not to pronounce triple talaq in one go under any circumstances. “The step is being taken to check increasing cases of triple talaq despite several steps taken by the Board to discourage the practice,” he said.

The new draft of the model nikahnama would come up for discussion and final approval during a Board meeting in Hyderabad on February 9. Sources claimed the Board is making a last ditch-attempt to ensure that legislation does not interfere with their religious laws.

The draft will be thoroughly discussed with Ulemas, Muslim scholars and Qazis before the Board approves it for immediate implementation.
