A day after the passing of SS Khaplang, the commander-in-chief of the NSCN Khaplang faction, Thuingaleng Muivah, the General Secretary of the NSCN Isak-Muivah faction has released a condolence message "forgiving SS Khaplang for the political mistakes and crimes he had committed."

"Based on the declaration made by our former chairman, late Isak Chisi Swu on forgiveness and reconciliation, we have forgiven SS Khaplang of all the political mistakes and crimes he had committed, however grave they might be, in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ," read the condolence released on Saturday evening by Muivah.

While Khaplang joined the Angami Zapu Phizo's Naga Nationalist Council (NNC) in 1968, Muivah had joined it in 1964. But when Phizo signed the Shillong Accord in 1975, it angered Chisi Swu, Muivah and Khaplang as they felt that Phizo had given into the establishment.

They broke away from the NNC in 1980 to form the NSCN. While Chisi Swu was the chairman, Khaplang was vice chairman. However, by 1988, Khaplang fell out with the two, and after an unsuccessful bid on Muivah's life, Khaplang moved to Myanmar. This led to Khaplang's soldiers chasing out the Indian Nagas from Myanmar. In 1997, NSCN (IM) signed a ceasefire agreement with the Indian government; and NSCN (K) signed it in 2001.

But, in his last days, Khaplang has restarted talks with the government. In a condolence message released on Saturday, Nagaland CM Shurhozelie Liezietsu said that the Nagaland government has been sending delegations to Myanmar to persuade him. "It was encouraging to learn that Khaplang had a few months back conveyed his willingness to have a dialogue with the government provided issues of substance were discussed," said Liezietsu.
