MJ Akbar visits Maldives to strengthen prosperity between two nations

Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar visited Maldives on February 21-22 to reiterate India?s support for a stable, democratic, peaceful and prosperous Maldives fulfilling the aspirations of its citizens.

During the visit, Akbar met President of Republic of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and also had a separate meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim.

Akbar's visit was to keep up with the tradition of close political consultations and exchanges between India and Maldives.

The minister conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi?s personal greetings to the President of Maldives.

During the meetings, both sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and agreed to impart fresh momentum for further deepening mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide spectrum.

The discussions focussed on areas of defence and security, counter-terrorism and economic ties including substantial investment in the tourism sector in Maldives.

President Abdul Gayoom conveyed his appreciation for the consistent support of India and reiterated the high priority attached by his government to India in keeping with their 'India First' policy.
