Mehbooba Mufti government foiled the separatists' Anantnag march on Monday when they detained Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a bid to prevent them from heading to the south Kashmir township.
Geelani and Mirwaiz, who had earlier been placed under house detention, tried to break the cordon at their Hyderpora and Nigeen residences respectively on Monday afternoon. However a large posse of police immediately swung into action and took them into custody before lodging them at Humhama and Nigeen police stations.
Geelani, Mirwaiz and incarcerated chairman of JKLF Mohammad Yasin Malik, who are jointly supervising the current agitation, had given the call for `Anantnag Chalo' and asked people of the valley to march towards south Kashmir to pay tributes to the people who died in the security forces firing since July 8.
Jammu and Kashmir government imposed strict curfew in parts of south and north Kashmir to foil the march. Despite curfew, people tried to lead small processions in south Kashmir. However security forces did not allow them to go ahead triggering clashes between the two sides at number of places.
"There was no curfew in most of the towns of Kashmir Valley. Curfew however remained imposed in twelve police stations of Srinagar and towns of Awantipora, Kulgam, Baramulla, Pattan and Anantnag," a police spokesman said.
Police said there were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the Valley although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from some places. "The situation throughout the Kashmir Valley remained peaceful and under control," said the spokesman.
Cross-LoC Karwan-e-Aman bus service, which had been suspended due to the unrest, resumed on Monday. Police said nearly 73 passengers left Srinagar in the morning and reached Kaman Post in garrison town of Uri in Baramulla district safely.
Terming the government's attempt to abort the 'Anantnag Chalo' programme as acceptance of defeat, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said such 'undemocratic' measures and curbs on the movement of resistance leaders and freedom-loving people cannot change the peoples craving for freedom in any manner.
"By adopting intransigent and rigid approach, New Delhi was just prolonging the crisis and its military and iron fist approach cannot suppress the voice of the people. Kashmir is a political issue which needs to be resolved through political engagement among all the parties –the people of Kashmir, India and Pakistan," said Mirwaiz.
