On the day BJP called Congress leader P Chidambaram a "Pakistani Poodle" over his remarks on Kashmir, its key ally and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti strongly advocated talks between India and Pakistan in order to take the state out of the current turmoil and ensure peace in the sub-continent.

Mehbooba's call for Indo-Pak friendship comes against the backdrop of the outrage over the remarks of Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) chief spokesman Rafi Mir condemning the killings of both terrorists and personnel of the Indian security forces. Mir also boasted that he and Mufti used to go to offer condolences whenever a terrorist was killed.

Unfazed by her aide's statement, Mehbooba coined a new slogan for lasting peace and friendship between India and Pakistan.

"Bare-sageer ke aman ki Khatir… Hind-Pak dosti zoroori Hai (Indo Pak friendship is necessary for the sake of peace in the sub-continent)," Mehbooba said while addressing a rally to mark the second death anniversary of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in Anantnag on Sunday.

Mehbooba requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan to shake hands and hold talks to take Jammu and Kashmir out of the blood-spattered quagmire. "I request Pakistan and our Prime Minister that in order to bring the people of Jammu and Kashmir out of the current quagmire and end to bloodshed please start talking. Please be friends again. They should live in peace and so should we," she said.

Invoking her father late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, she said the late leader had always stated that both countries needed to join hands to solve the Kashmir issue.

"Mufti Sahab always used to say that both countries need to join hands for solving the Kashmir issue. Jammu and Kashmir has become an arena of war and it should become the bridge for peace. And that is why cross-LoC Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote roads were reopened. However, things were not taken very seriously after the late leader demitted office in 2005," she added.
