Marvel has released images of THOR #1 giving readers a preview of the first issue to feature the female Thor. The new series is being drawn by Russell Dauterman and written by Jason Aaron.

Marvel introduces the series, saying "The great hammer Mjölnir lies on the surface of the moon, unable to be lifted by anyone in all the heavens – even the Mighty Thor! Something dark has befallen the Thunder God, leaving him unworthy and unable to lift his magic hammer. With an army of Frost Giants invading Earth, the Odinson may not have the strength to stop them – and the hammer will be lifted by an all-new Thor! A mysterious woman unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before!"

Marvel editor Wil Moss said in a statement that since the words engraved on Thor's hammer say "whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor" the role of the male hero would now be taken by a woman. In the preview pages we say the engraving change to 'if SHE be worthy'.

Writer Jason Aaron added that the character wasn't a temporary female substitute"She-Thor," "Lady Thor" or "Thorita," and would play the one and only Thor of the Marvel Universe from now.

The comic, which would be Marvel's 8th to feature a female in its leading role, would be available from October 2014.
