A 48-year-old Naxal, carrying a reward of Rs six lakh on his head, was gunned down by the the police in an encounter at Aheri tehsil here, officials said today.

An anti-Naxal operation operation was conducted at Kapewancha jungle yesterday during which the ultras opened fire on the local police team between 5.30 and 6 pm, they said.

During a heavy exchange of fire, the police team gunned down one Naxal, identified as Mangru alias Ram Chinna Portet, while others managed to flee the spot, a press release issued by the Gadchiroli Police said.

A 12 bore gun and some Naxal literature were also recovered from the spot, said the release.

Portet was an area committee member of Aheri Dalam and allegedly involved in over 40 cases, it added.
