Congress and its ally Left Front today staged a walk-out in the Assembly after demonstrating inside against the eviction of leader of opposition and Congress veteran Abdul Mannan by marshals last week, which led to his illness and subsequent hospitalisation.

Repeated requests by Speaker Biman Banerjee fell on deaf ears as Congress leader Manoj Chakraborty and CPI(M)'s Sujan Chakraborty, Tanmoy Bhattacharya along with other MLAs demonstrated in the well of the Assembly and then walked out of the House.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury yesterday said that party MLAs would not participate in the Assembly and would continue with their protest till Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologises for the Mannan incident.

Ruling Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee described the move of Congress and CPI(M) led Left Front as their strategy to survive by grabbing media attention.

"They are trying to convert a non-issue into an issue.

They must stop attacking the chief minister and stop creating hindrances in the proceedings of the Assembly. I think their behaviour is quite unparliamentary," he said.

Chatterjee dubbed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit to hospital to see Mannan as an 'unprecedented' incident and said, "The opposition does not have the courtesy towards the chief minister. I will request them to stop this and do what they are here for."

Mannan was hospitalised after he had taken ill while being evicted by the marshal from the House which witnessed noisy scenes and a scuffle between Congress MLAs and the security staff on February 8. The chief minister went to visit him in the hospital three days later.
