West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the South Dinajpore district police during her visit over the delay in rescuing the mentally challenged tribal rape victim.

"I heard the girl was lying on the road for 14 hours before she was spotted. What were you doing? You should act promptly. Who was the local PS in-charge? Don't your officers patrol the streets?" she said.

She said that women and youth of the area should stand up against such incidents. The 28-year-old girl had been raped and offenders thrust an iron rod into her private part before dumping her at the side of the road. She had been admitted at Malda Medical College and Hospital and on Tuesday.

Mamata, who went to visit her, asked the district administration to open a bank account for the girl and deposited Rs 4,12,000 in the account on Wednesday.

"We want her to get well soon. I will see to it that she doesn't have to face hardships for this," the CM said.
