The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit back at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her recent outburst against the Centre for interfering into the internal affairs of the state, saying the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo should uphold the dignity of her post and not stoop down low for political gains.

"No Chief Minister can make such petty statements about the Prime Minister. With regard to providing financial assistance, the West Bengal Government received majority of the Centre's attention. She should uphold the dignity of her post," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Meanwhile, another BJP leader Udit Raj said the Chief Minister's claim is unfounded and asked her to introspect before putting the onus on the Centre. "Mamata Banerjee is well-known for her unnecessary interference in the working of others. Be it curbing the freedom of writers and showing high handedness for a cartoon sketch, she doesn't give space for dissent and doesn't give freedom," he said.

"Our government believes in federal structure. Last year, the Centre gave Rs. 2 lakh crore to the state. It showcases our belief in federalism and federal structure. I think the Chief Minister's allegation is unfounded," he added.

Addressing a large rally in Kolkata earlier on Friday, the TMC boss took on the Centre and said that she would protest on the roads of Delhi if they don't stop interfering in the affairs of West Bengal. Last week, the TMC chief accused Prime Minister Modi-led government of "bulldozing" the federal structure and violating Constitution. "It is interfering in the functioning of the state governments. We will seek the opinion of the President," she said.
