Even though Opposition party opposed the move, the proposal was approved ny majority.
On Wednesday, Shiv Sena and BJP joined hands to award contract worth Rs. 227 crore to tainted contractors for reconstruction of four bridges in the city and suburbs.
The proposal was approved by majority even as opposition parties continued their protest in the meeting and staged a walk-out. BJP was in support of the same. Ironically, they claimed the credit for exposing the road scam by these contractors.
In a PIL filed against the BMC regarding Hancock Bridge, the civic administration has failed to mention that the contractors appointed by the BMC for the bridge are tainted.The contractors like J Kumar Infra Projects Ltd, R P S Infra Projets, Relcon and R K Madhani have been selected for the reconstruction of bridges.
Contractors have quoted the cost of construction over and above the civic estimation. Recently, after the Roads Inquiry was made public, these contractors have been booked for irregularities and the Municipal Commissioner has demanded stricter action.
The Inquiry report has clearly held the contractors responsible for criminal conspiracy and the Civic Roads Department has started the process of blacklisting the contractors.Chetan Kadam, MNS corporator expressed his objection to the proposal.
He pointed out that the proposal cannot be approved since the contractors are already under scanner and the report submitted by the inquiry committee clearly indicts all the four contractors. However, when his protest was ignored, he flung the copies of proposal in the meeting and staged a walk-out.Following which the other opposition party members took up the issue and questioned the civic administration about the surety of the quality of work and the completion of the job on time.
Pravin Chheda – Leader of the Opposition and Rais Shaikh – Samajwadi Party Leader of the BMC said that by extending the support to Shiv Sena in awarding the contracts to tainted contractors, BJP is exposed today.
"The party which claimed the credit for exposing the Road Scam has extended its support to approve the proposal. This clearly shows the double standard of BJP", said Chheda.After the walk-out, Shaikh said that the Sena – BJP are using tax payers' money and by awarding contracts to tainted contractors they are playing with people's life.
