A 55-year-old head constable committed suicide on the premises of Roun police station in this district, allegedly after a spat with his senior officer over cleaning up the place under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on Monday, the police said on Tuesday.
"Ramkumar Shukla killed himself by consuming some poisonous substance after he and police inspector SS Gaur had an altercation over cleaning the police station on Gandhi Jayanti under the SBA," superintendent of police Anil Singh Kushwah told PTI.
Shukla was initially rushed to the district hospital and then to Gwalior, where he died last night.
Meanwhile, the head constable's family members held a protest with his body near the City Kotwali police station demanding that Gaur and Kushwah be booked for murder.
The SP said he had already ordered a probe into the suicide and that Gaur has been "line attached" (taken off the field duty).
Shukla's family members alleged that the SP failed to act even though the head constable called him up and sought his intervention.
"In a bid to calm him (Shukla) down, I told him over phone to join the duty in police line if he was not adjusting with the inspector. What wrong did I do?" he asked.
However, the deceased head constable's son Vikas alleged that Gaur had beaten up his father who was unwell, which he said prompted him to consume poison.
Further investigation is on.
