India’s most populated state, Uttar Pradesh, has the highest number of un-electrified households in the country. The state has a higher school drop-out rate, infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality ratio (MMR) compared to other states in the country. The state also fares poorly on nutrition parameters and has the costliest industrial tariff as compared to other states.

These facts were featured in a series of presentations made to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath by members of a high-level Niti Aayog delegation on Wednesday.
A 18-member delegation led by Dr Arvind Panagariya, Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog, held day-long deliberations on the way forward for Uttar Pradesh and addressed key developmental needs of the state across sectors.

Presently, the state has 182 lakh un-electrified households of the total 255 lakh un-electrified households in the country. The state has the highest industrial tariff in the country at Rs 9.18.

The picture of the state’s education sector is grim as well. As far as the school dropout rate is concerned, UP comprises 21 of the 100 worst-performing districts in the country. In terms of student-teacher ratio in schools, UP accounts for 32 of the 100 worst-performing districts in the country.

Both in IMR and MMR, UP secures a rank among the bottom three states in the list. On nutrition parameters, UP comprises 29 of the 100 worst-performing districts of the country.
Sources said the Niti Aayog, in its deliberations with the UP government on transforming the state, put emphasis on a road map to boost the state's economic growth, stating that it would serve as an antidote to poverty. The state’s stagnant manufacturing sector, its link to urbanisation and ways to increase the growth of the sector were also discussed during the meeting.
