The Left Front today staged a rally to protest against the police assault on their activists during their march to the state secretariat on May 22.

The rally was led by CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra and Left Front chairman Biman Bose from Lenin Sarani in Esplanade to Entally market. Other senior Left leaders also took part in the rally.

The activists carrying posters and placards shouted slogans against the TMC government and the police administration.

"We strongly condemn the unprecedented and barbaric police atrocities on a peaceful demonstration yesterday.

Hundreds of our protesters were grievously injured and over a hundred of them are reportedly in a critical condition," Mishra said.

"If the state government believes that through such brutality, protests will be crushed in West Bengal, then they are living in fool's paradise. The people of West Bengal will continue to rise in protest," Mishra said.

Over 100 Left party activists and 79 police personnel were injured in clashes at various places in the city and its twin city Howrah during a Left-sponsored march to the secretariat

yesterday.

The police said that 217 people, including 11 Left MLAs, were arrested in the two cities.
