It was a raw courage and indomitable spirit coupled with patriotic fervour that defined Lance Naik Gopal Singh Bhadoria and Sepoy Raghubeer Singh of the First Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army.

Caring little for their own safety, the two bravehearts set a new standard of valour when they stormed the house to take on the highly entrenched militants before laying down their lives in the line of duty at Frisal village of South Kashmir's Kulgam district on Sunday.

"It called for raw courage to approach a house where the terrorists were confirmed to be hiding — even more so when the response had to be very guarded given the fact that the terrorists were holding a hostage in that house," said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Four top local militants were killed after security forces received information about their presence in a house in Frisal village of south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday night. A joint team of Ist-Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir police and the 18th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) immediately cordoned off the area to flush out the militants.

"Lance Naik Gopal Singh Bhadoria and Sepoy Raghubeer Singh epitomised selfless courage as they were the leading pair of the team that launched an operation in Frisal," said Colonel Kalia.

Both soldiers were part of the assault team that stormed the house in the wee hours of Sunday. However, they came under heavy barrage of firing from the hiding militants resulting in their death.

Hailing from Gokulchand Chali Chamanpura village in Ahmedabad, 33-year-old Lance Naik Gopal Singh Bhadoria has served in the army for the last 14 years. Lance Naik Gopal is survived by his wife B Hemavati.

Sepoy Raghubeer Singh was only 31 years old and was serving the army for 13 years. Hailing from Makholi village in Chamoli in Uttarakhand, Sepoy Singh is survived by his wife Rekha and a six-year-old son.

Rich tributes were paid to the fallen heroes of Frisal at 15 corps headquarters at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar. Major General KK Pant, Chief of Staff, 15 Corps laid floral wreaths on behalf of the Corps Commander and all ranks of the formation.

Meanwhile, Abul Majeed Reshi, father of slain civilian Ishaq Majeed Reshi, said his two sons were detained by security forces during the night.

Brigadier R Chakraborty, commander 1-sector RR however said for the first time the terrorists hiding in the house did not release the civilian and kept him hostage.

"When there was no other option, we entered the house to save the civilian. Seeing us, he (Ishaq) came running but the militants hiding behind opened fire in which he and two of our soldiers were killed," he said.
