Konkan Railway has imposed a speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour for all its trains running on the 741 km route as a precautionary measure after the derailment of the 12223 Kurla LTT-Ernakulam Duronto on May 3 near Madgaon in Goa. Ten coaches of the train had derailed, damaging most of them, although there were no injuries to any passenger.

Replying to a query by DNA, BP Tayal, managing director of Konkan Railway said that the speed restriction will be in place till KR gets the metallurgical test report of the rail piece that got fractured during the May 3 incident.

The speed restriction however would mean that the line- already congested because of the single set of tracks and also a large number of special trains run by Central Railway, Southern Railway as well as KR itself- will get slower still. That means lesser number of trains on the heavily-patronised Mumbai-Goa-Mangalore-Kerala route, one of the country's busiest passenger stretches.

"Konkan Railway is a route where there are 91 tunnels totalling 84 kilometes. Several stretches are landslide prone. In all these places there are already permanent speed restrictions on trains. If the overall speed is also pegged at 90 kmph, the chances of trains getting delayed are higher. But yes, safety is something that cannot be taken for granted so it is something that at the point seems unavoidable," said a KR official.

Konkan Railway in numbers:
Total route-741 kms
Total stations - 58
Inter-station distance-15 kms
Ideal inter-station distance- 10kms
Daily trains- 68
