Students of Presidency University gheraoed their Vice Chancellor, Anuradha Lohia, on Friday, demanding her immediate resignation after several students were allegedly manhandled on campus by the police during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit. The Vice Chancellor was gheraoed by the students from 5.30 pm on Friday, forcing her to spend the night in office.

"I am not going to resign as I have not done anything wrong," Lohia said. "I did not call the police inside the campus. Since there was VVIP movement, the police personnel were deployed. If the students have suffered any injuries, I will look into it," she added.

Trouble broke out during the Chief Minister Banerjee's maiden visit to the university on Friday when students waved black flags at her and raised slogans like 'Presidency does not welcome you, CM’ and ‘You are not welcome, CM’. The students were protesting the April 2, 2013 incident where SFI leader Sudipta Gupta allegedly died in police custody after a protest rally. The same year, on April 10, a procession led by Trinamool Congress supporters barged onto the premises of the university and ransacked their laboratory.

While the Chief Minister was leaving after her visit, students were allegedly manhandled by police to clear the way for her. "When the Chief Minister was leaving, we all rushed towards her. That is when police in civil clothes started pushing us and manhandling us. So many of my friends have suffered serious injuries. Police cannot manhandle students on campus. The vice chancellor has to resign," said Trisha Chanda, general secretary, Independents' Consolidation.

The students said that they will now boycott the convocation ceremony that is to be held at the university on Saturday.

On the other hand, Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad, the youth wing of the Trinamool Congress, has announced a counter rally led by the unit's state secretary Ashok Rudra to condemn the gherao by students.
