Two days after 17-year-old Aabesh Dasgupta was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a plush residential complex’s parking lot in South Kolkata, the police set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death.

The SIT comprises of officers of the homicide wing of the Detective Department and will be headed by the Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime), Vishal Garg. The move comes in the wake of the police not being able to reach a conclusion to ascertain whether it was a murder or an accident, 48 hours after the incident took place.

While the post-mortem was carried out on Sunday evening, the autopsy surgeons reserved its report and primary opinion till Monday evening. However, sources in the police revealed that alcohol was found in the teen’s stomach and that he was drinking when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, the teenager's mother Rimjhim Dasgupta has alleged that the police were trying to tone the case down and prove it was an accident. “There is no clarity as to what the police are doing. It seems like they are trying to make it a case of accident. I believe and will continue to believe that my son was murdered. If it was an accident, why did his friends not rush him to the hospital instead of fleeing the spot? I hope justice is delivered to my son,” she said.

On Monday, the police sent the clothes of the victim and one of his friends for forensic tests. The alcohol bottles that were seized from the spot on the day of the incident have also been sent for tests.

Dasgupta was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Saturday evening at 6, Sunny Park complex. The teen was a student of an International school and was invited by one of his friends to attend a birthday party. They greeted this friend at the apartment and went ahead for lunch at Princeton Club. From there, they went back to the apartment and allegedly started drinking in the lawn.

According to Aabesh’s mother, he got into a war of words with a friend and was later stabbed by a broken alcohol bottle on his armpit. She added that after he fell on the ground and was bleeding profusely, he was abandoned by all his friends as they fled the spot.
