Bringing back memories of Robinson Street incident, a 70-year-old lady was found staying for about four days with her dead husband in Kolkata. The incident occurred at Ostad Amir Khan Sarani under Haridevpur Police Station. The lady has been sent to a mental home for now. Police is currently investigating the case. However, no signs of foul play has been found so far.

For the last few days, the newspaper man was keeping the newspapers outside the door of the apartment where these elderly, childless couple used to stay. One of the neighbours noticed that some of the newspapers were lying unused at the door. Apprehending there could be some medical emergency he, along with his wife knocked at the door. “Since both of them were over 70 years, I thought there could have been any health related problem. So we knocked at the door at about 10 pm on Saturday. When there was no response, I called up their niece. When she arrived, police was informed,” said the 50-plus neighbour. He added that he had last seen the occupants on January 8.

Officials of Haridevpur PS said that after they broke in, they saw that in the bedroom body of 82-year-old Amar Kumar Sanyal was lying and his wife Hasi Rani Sanyal was sitting beside the body. “She was visibly disturbed to see the cops walking in the room. She couldn’t say anything when asked about her dead husband. We suspect she is mentally disbalanced. Amar was a former employee of Calcutta Dock Labour Board, a unit of Kolkata Port Trust. His body has been sent for a postmortem,” said an official of Haridevpur PS.

Looking at the condition of Amar’s body, detectives said that he had died at least four days ago. No foul play has been detected so far and he seemed to have died of old age. Police also said that blood stains were found in front of the main gate which they were looking into. Neighbours also said that couple’s nephew used to come over to their place but of late he was not allowed inside the house. “Prima facie no foul play is suspected but an investigation is on and we are looking into all the possible aspects behind the death,” said the police official.

The lady has been sent to Kasba Manobikas Centre (Mental Healthcare institute) for the time being. Area locals said that the duo had come over to the place a few years ago and although they were cordial, they liked to keep to themselves most of the time and did not socialise much.

On June 11, 2015, Partha De, a 44-year-old person was found to have kept the bodies of his sister and two pet dogs inside the apartment on 3 Robinson Street, off Park Street, for six months and had been living with them before it was discovered by police officers.
