The PDP on Monday called upon the residents of Jammu and Kashmir to unitedly face the calamity caused by the unprecedented rains and floods, and said the need of the hour was cooperation from all regions of the state.
"The prevailing situation requires patience, help, cooperation from all regions and sub-regions of the state and pooling in of all resources in terms of either finance or manpower," PDP leader Yuvraj Vikramaditya said in Jammu.
Addressing a meeting of senior party leaders to assess the prevailing flood situation in the state, Vikramaditya said, "This is a testing time for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir because the state has been facing the worst ever natural calamity of the recent times." He exhorted PDP workers to extend every possible help to the affected families across the state.
He also impressed upon the authorities to take some preventive measures as fear of an epidemic looms large due to the accumulation of water in many parts of the state.
Calling upon the authorities to depute teams to asses total losses due to the devastating rains and flash floods, Vikramaditya said it should be done on a war-footing.
He suggested that instead of deputing teams of different departments, the government should constitute teams which comprise of officers from all allied departments so as to conduct joint surveys at village level.
This will help in providing relief and compensation among the victims without any delay, he said, adding, shelters must be provided to the people whose houses have been completely damaged before commencement of the winter season.
He also asked the government to provide free ration to the residents of flood affected districts. "At some places, people have lost everything in the floods so there is need to immediately provide ration and other materials to save them from starvation", he said.
The meeting noted that the failure of the state's machinery to face the situation was a matter of concern and emphasised on the need for a more prepared state's disaster management wing.
