Authorities have placed moderate Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention and imposed restrictions in the sensitive old Srinagar city to prevent separatist-sponsored protests against the recent civilian killings on Friday.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of separatists had called for Kashmir-wide protests after Friday congregational prayers against the “killing of civilians, indiscriminate use of pellets and vandalizing properties”.

JRL is an amalgam of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded the last year's unrest in Kashmir valley that left 100 people dead and thousands others injured and blinded.

“The growing aggression against unarmed and peaceful people in state has touched the alarming line and turned this beautiful place into a battle field. Authorities are desperate to cover their gruesome and inhuman acts and shielding criminals under the garb of Mistaken identity”, said a JRL spokesman.’

Expressing deep anguish over the continuous silence of international community, the JRL spokesman said though several resolutions were accepted in UNO to resolve this long pending issue, no steps have been initiated to end the hostilities in sub-continent.

“International community should take concrete political steps to resolve the longstanding Kashmir dispute”, he said.

Sensing trouble and apprehending law and order situation, the authorities were quick to take preventive measures to prevent the situation from flaring up.

Moderate Hurriyat chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is also the chief cleric of Jamia Masjid, was placed under the house detention at his Nigeen residence on Thursday evening. “Put back under house arrest, was released yesterday evening only”, Mirwaiz tweeted with a picture showing police vehicles outside his residence.

Authorities have also decided to impose restrictions in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations in Srinagar city.

Official sources said complete restrictions shall be imposed in the areas falling under Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal police station. However there will be partial restrictions in the areas falling Maisuma and Kralkud police stations of Srinagar district.
