The lie detection test that is used to cross-examine the accused in criminal cases will soon become a history. Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is developing a technique to detect the crime through eye-detection method, with the cooperation of Israel-based company. The method of eye detection will be more precise giving actual results of crime detection and that will be applied soon in Gujarat.

The director general of Gujarat Forensic Science University (GFSU), Dr JM Vyas, said, "We received cooperation from EyeDetect company in Israel to develop this technique and that is again supported by Israel government. The formalities for the purchase of technology is over and we will start using it soon. This method is more precise as eyes never lie. The movement of the retina during the cross-examination of accused exactly reflects the thought process in his mind and this will give exact results."

"We are developing this method as per the anatomy of the Indian people and effect of the local atmosphere on the human body and related movement of the retina. This is the technology which is adopted by any of the forensic laboratories in the Asian region and is the most advanced one. We hope for continuous cooperation from Israel as they are very good at crime detection technology development," Vyas added.

Vyas also informed that the FSL has been in constant coordination with the Israel government and crime detection wing there. The FSL and Israel have been running training programme and orientation workshop for crime detection for many years.

"In 2008, when the serial bomb blast had occurred in Gujarat and then in Mumbai, we took help of the Israeli technology to identify the accused. We had prepared a set of 30 questions that the accused had to read keeping their hand on a specially-designed apparatus. The system would read their minds by the change in temperature of their body while reading the questions. This technology also was purchased from Israel," added Vyas.

THE EYE CAN’T LIE

  • Movement of the retina during the cross-examination of accused exactly reflects the thought process in his mind and this will give exact results.
  • The method, developed as per the body of the Indian people and the local atmosphere,  can read the movement of retina.
