Inter-ministerial pact aims at economic, social empowerment of

The Ministries of Textiles and Social Justice and Empowerment today entered a pact which aims at improving the earnings of scheduled caste artisans across the country and enhance their participation at domestic and international level.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) and National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSCFDC), a central PSU, in the presence of Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani and Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot.

"MoU between DC(Handicrafts) & NSFDC will improve income of nearly 12 lakh SC handicraft artisans & empower them economically & socially," Irani tweeted.

"Convergence of efforts between @TexMinIndia & @MSJEGOI is in line with PM @narendramodi ji's clarion call to collectively address issues," she said in another tweet.

The collaboration stresses on the need for assessment and gap identification through popularising various schemes by holding awareness camps and aims at extensive need-based skill upgradation in the identified clusters having dominant presence of SC artisans, and adoption of modern tools and techniques

It also aims at working on capital credit for scheduled caste artisans at concessional rates by combining the benefits provided by the two ministries.

"It has also been agreed in the MoU that the office of the DC(Handicrafts) through its various schemes, will support NSCDFC in formulation of project reports, undertaking field studies for identifying felt needs of SC artisans, in addition to extending assistance of six regional offices and 52 marketing and service extension Centres of the Office of the DC(Handicrafts)," a senior official said.
