INS Kalvari, the Scorpene-class submarine and a Make in India initiative, was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in Mumbai.
“To dedicate this submarine to the nation is an equal proud moment for me. After a gap of nearly two decades India has got this kind of a submarine and Kalvari is a fine example of the Make-in-India testimony. It is also a good model for international collaboration,” Modi said at Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.<
Here is all you need to know about INS Kalvari:
1. Designed by French naval defence company DCNS, INS Kalvari is a silent diesel electric attack submarine.
2. The submarine has superior stealth features like low radiated noise levels, advanced acoustic silencing techniques, hydro-dynamically optimised shape and it has precision-guided weapons to launch a deadly attack on the enemy.
3. INS Kalvari has the ability to carry out various type of missions like anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, laying mine, gathering intelligence and surveillance of areas.
4. Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System (SUBTICS) of INS Kalvari has the ability to gather and process information from onboard sonars which helps to detect hidden targets and enemies.
5. The submarine has infrared or low level cameras and laser range finders to locate enemy targets on sea surface.
6. INS Kalvari, named after deep-sea tiger shark, has a speed of 20 knots with SM-39 Exocet missiles and heavy-weight torpedoes.
7. With height of 12.3 metres and length of 67.5 metres, it weighs 1,565-tonne.
8. INS Kalvari is the first conventional submarine to be commissioned in the Indian Navy after 17 years. The first time ever a submarine was inducted in the Indian Naxy was from Russia in 1967.
9. After being inducted in Indian Navy, INS Kalvari underwent extensive trials and checks for 120 days.
10. The first of the six Scorpene-class submarines, is part of the Indian Navy's 'Project-75' costing Rs 23,652.
