Haryana's main opposition INLD today held a demonstration to highlight the state of farmers in the country and condemned the killing of peasants at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh.
The party also resolved not to meet Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at his residence in the future to protest the alleged bad treatment of its leaders by security and other officials at the entrance of the premises today.
Led by Abhay Singh Chautala, all INLD MLAs and two party MPs -- Charanjit Singh Rori and Ram Kumar Kashyap, besides its state unit chief Ashok Arora and youth leader Digvijay Chautala took part in the protest.
After the party's executive meeting, INLD members, including senior leaders Ramphal Majra and Jaswinder Sandhu started to march from the party office towards the chief minister's residence, but they were stopped by Chandigarh Police who had set up barricades about 500 m away.
"We had prepared two memoranda on various issues. One was to be forwarded to the Prime Minister and another one had to be submitted to the Chief Minister.
"However, we were stopped by the police and the chief minister's Principal Secretary R K Khullar, who was present there, told us to come with a small delegation to meet the CM," Arora said.
He said in the memorandum which was to be forwarded to the prime minister, the INLD demanded immediate implementation of Swaminathan Commission report, farm loan waiver and dismissal of the current Madhya Pradesh government for "raining bullets on farmers".
"In the memorandum which was to be given to the CM, we had demanded crop loan waiver for Haryana farmers which amounts to nearly Rs 56,000 crore. We also pointed out that the farmers were not getting adequate price for their crops in Haryana.
"We demanded immediate steps to improve the law-and-order situation in the state and also touched upon the power situation in the state, especially in rural areas which get electricity only for a few hours a day," he said.
When the INLD MLAs and MPs went to the chief minister's residence, they were asked to deposit articles they were carrying, including mobile phones, pens and watches at the security gate, Arora said.
"Abhay Chautala said that they should be allowed to carry these articles, but were not allowed to do so. We then decided not to meet the chief minister in the future at his residence as all legislators said they felt humiliated in the manner they were treated," he said.
The INLD's Hayrana unit chief said that later this week, a group of party leaders led by Abhay Chautala will go to Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, the epicentre of a violent stir by farmers.
