India to support Afghan efforts to build a peaceful country

India has reassured Afghanistan that it will continue to support it in its efforts to build a peaceful, stable and united country where the democratic and pluralistic aspirations of the Afghan people are met.

This was conveyed to Deputy Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Hekmat Karzai during his meetings here, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said, adding that the visiting minister also called on Minister of State M J Akbar.

Karzai had met Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and Secretary (ER) Amar Sinha.

The Afghan minister also apprised the India side of the present security situation and efforts being made by the Government of Afghanistan towards peace and reconciliation in the country.

"The Indian side reiterated its commitment to continue to support the government and the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to build a peaceful, stable, prosperous and united country within which the democratic and pluralistic aspirations of people of country are met," he said.

Both sides exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and reviewed progress in implementation of the development cooperation projects and the decisions taken during the visits of Afghan President Ghani to India last year, he said.

Asked if the two sides discussed the issue of an air corridor between the two countries, the spokesperson said all on-going cooperation matters figured during these meetings.
