In UP's Etawah, 2 girls who had gone to school found murdered, rape suspected

According to a recent report, 95% of the rapists are known to the victims. Over 3,000 rape cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh last year.

In yet another reminder of grim levels of women's safety in the country, the Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday found bodies of girls, who were missing for last three days.

The UP police found the bodies of two girls in in Etawah district. The cops suspect that the girls were kidnapped, raped and murdered.

According to the officials, three girls — Laxmi, Yogita and Himani — students of Class XI went missing from Rania area in Kanpur Dehat on Tuesday. They had gone to school but never returned home.

The families of the girls accused the local police of not acting on time. They had staged a massive protests outside the Rania police Station on Wednesday. After public outrage, the SHO Rania Police Station RK Gangwar was suspended.

On Wednesday evening, the Etawah Police recovered bodies of young two girls from a canal.

They informed the Kanpur Police which rushed Etawah along with family members for identification.

Bodies were identified as Himani (17) and Yogita (18). There is no information about the third missing girl Laxmi.

The bodies of the victims have been sent for post-mortem. The Kanpur Police said they were awaiting the post-mortem reports to ascertain the cause of death and if the girls were raped before being murdered.

A case has been registered against one Kuldeep Singh and some unknown persons. The police is yet to arrest anyone in this connection.
