This area situated in Ahmedabad city hit the headlines for holding a ‘besna’ or a condolence meet for a road! As far as protests go, it was definitely innovative. In fact, the uniqueness of the protests not only got them the attention of the media, but also the authorities, who for the last six months had been ignoring their request.
Moments into a condolence meet held in Gota, the resident of 27 societies of Gota (TP number 32) had a visit from BJP MLA Bhupendra Patel.
The residents on Sunday morning held a besna (condolence meet) of the road in their area. The road that had been dug up for resurfacing was never resurfaced and by way of work the civic body had just dumped gravel on it. The residents had even got a pandal ready with a garlanded photograph of the road as part of the condolence meet.
“We had to resort to this because no one was paying heed to our complaint. There are 27 societies in and around this road and it is so bad that by evening out house is full of dust. The gravel and stones dumped on the roads leads to several accidents,” said Ajay Chauhan, a resident of Stavan Ample one of the societies that surround the poor road.
Chauhan said driving is so dangerous that often stones that come under the vehicle tyres go flying, hitting pedestrians or other vehicles passing by.
He alleged that many residents had left the area due to the poor road.
The residents innovative mode of protest had garnered them widespread publicity in the media. This also caught the attention of BJP MLA from Ghatlodia (the area falls under the constituency) Bhupendra Patel, who arrived to talk to the residents while the besna was underway.
“We have issued a tender for the resurfacing of the road but haven’t got any response from interested parties. We will be again issuing one and will get the matter resolved soon,” said Patel while interacting with the residents.
Chauhan said Patel assured them that their problems will be addressed. “He hasn’t given us a time limit by which the problem will be addressed but assured that they will be issuing new tenders for the same,” Chauhan said.
