Making it clear that providing a loan waiver at this juncture was not possible, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that the Union Government was preparing a scheme and that the state government would share the burden so that 3.1 million indebted farmers were brought under institutional credit system.

Making a statement in the state assembly over the loan waiver issue, Fadnavis said that the state government was not against giving loan waiver but wanted to make agriculture sustainable for which it had gone for massive investment in this sector. He said that immediate loan waiver would hamper fiscal discipline and hamper investment in other social schemes.

Fadnavis informed the House that after his government came to power, the agriculture sector had recorded 12.5% this year, which was negative last year. He said that the collective income of the farmers in the state had increased by Rs 40,000 crore.

Fadnavis informed that his government had gone for unprecedented investment in agriculture sector to increase potential irrigation, moisture security, mechanised agriculture, soil testing and providing state of the art technology to farmers. He said that the government would now give thrust to post-harvest technology and providing market linkages to farmers.
