After Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmavat would not be screened in the state, Maharashtra Tourism and Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Minister Jaykumar Rawal said that they too would oppose the movie if it 'distorted history'.

The movie, whose title was changed from 'Padmavati' to 'Padmavat', is scheduled to be released on January 25. The movie — featuring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor — is based on Delhi sultanate ruler Alauddin Khilji's lust for Chittor's queen Rani Padmini, which had led to a battle between the two states. The movie had faced strong opposition from Rajput and Hindutva groups and politicians over the depictions of Rajput history.

"This is not a question of opposing or supporting it. If the censor board has passed it with some cuts, I want to see what the cuts are. If it is not distorting history, then I will think and then react," said Rawal, who is a Rajput from Dondaicha in Dhule district. He said that they would watch the edited version before deciding on the stance.

"We will oppose it if there is a distortion of history. They (film makers) claimed that they have made changes, we will examine what these edits are..." said Rawal, while speaking to the media on Tuesday.

Earlier, Rawal, who had met representatives of protesting groups, had demanded that 'contentious scenes' in the film be deleted and it be banned if it took 'liberties' with history.

Rawal, who is a BJP MLA from Sindhkeda in Dhule, had written to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in November to immediately cancel the certificate to the movie and allow experts historians to watch it and edit the "defamatory fantasies for the language, scripts, scenes and shots which are undermining, devaluing, insulting the great valour and sacrifice of Rani Padmavati who is worshipped by lakhs of people."

In Maharashtra, the Rajputs account for sizeable numbers in North Maharashtra and parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada.
