Defending his position amidst allegations of trying to impose the sangh ideology on students in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi says: "I have never forced students to go to shakhas or follow RSS ideology, they can chose to do whatever they want."

An RSS ideologue, Tripathi, who is believed to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi further adds, "I believe in the RSS ideology but I would never try to impose it on the students. I know that ideologies don't run universities, neither do governments. Universities are run by the statutes and mandates that are defined for them."

"Governments can give directions to universities and universities will have to comply," he adds.

On Thursday, the Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar's meeting with Vice Chancellors of various central universities in BHU was also linked to government idea of filling up the vacant faculty positions with RSS cadre. According to the ministry's own report submitted in parliament last year, 1,310 posts of professors are lying vacant in various universities.

Talking about BHU being chosen as the location for meeting, Tripathi says: "Only 20 per cent of weightage is given to interview in faculty hiring, rest is the academic record. So I cannot say how much can government decide on hiring an RSS or non-RSS person."

Tripathi has allowed RSS units to conduct rallies inside the university campus and has himself been seen hoisting the RSS student wing ABVP's flag on various occasions. "Having a RSS unit or shakha inside the university is not illegal. Shakhas have always existed in universities. Some people with agendas are just trying to malign the name of the university."

The V-C has also been accused of creating a hostile environment for girls in the campus. He has stopped girls from using the 24 X 7 library in the campus and their hostel timings have been restricted to 8 pm every night.

"What is wrong in restricting women timings to 8 pm. I treat the girls in my university as my own daughters, I do not want them to step out after 8 pm. Will you not ask your sister where is she going if she is stepping out of house after 8 pm. Girls of our university are good but some girls from other universities come here and spoil the atmosphere," he adds.
