An IAS officer of the 2008 batch posted in the state tribal affairs department was arrested in a trap laid by the Palghar division of the Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly accepting Rs 12 lakh as bribe for promoting junior officers from Ashram schools in Palghar.

According to ACB officers, the IAS officer Milind Gawade, an Additional Commissioner in the tribal affairs department, was arrested in the trap along with Kiran Mali, a Deputy Commissioner in the same department, while accepting Rs 12 lakh for promoting 12 junior officials in the department. The duo allegedly repeatedly issued threats to the junior officers of stalling their promotions if they failed to pay the bribe.

After the trap, an additional Rs 12 lakh was allegedly found on Mali's office desk.

The two officials were allegedly arrested red-handed by the ACB while accepting the cash in the tribal affairs department's sub office in Thane. ACB teams had kept a watch on the two officials and had recorded calls through the complainant. The complainant asked the officials to arrive at the sub office in Thane in Wagle Estate, following which the trap was laid.

The bribe money was paid by 12 junior officers who were seeeking promotions. According to the ACB, the two accused allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh per person for the promotions.

“The two officials were demanding a bribe from the complainant and were repeatedly threatening to demote him if he failed to pay the money, and so a trap was laid after confirmation,” said a senior ACB officer.

“They were caught red handed while accepting the bribe money, and after a search at the office of the deputy commissioner Kiran Mali we have found Rs 12 lakhs,” the officer added.

“We will be checking their property and bank details to ascertain the source of money. The complainant has submitted evidence and we have recorded the proceedings of the raid,” said the officer.
