Spelling more trouble for Rashtriya Janata Dal's first family, the Income-Tax Department has provisionally attached properties of former chief minister and RJD MLC Rabri Devi and her daughter Hema Yadav in Patna, in course of their investigation of alleged Benami deals of the family.

Confirming the development, a senior official of the I-T Department based in Patna, said, "An order has been issued to provisionally (for 90 days) attach three properties — one belonging to the former CM and two registered in the name of her daughter, worth around Rs 1.5-2 crore at present. Further investigation is underway."

The attached properties include two adjoining plots of land, around 15 decimal in Danapur, which was "gifted" to Hema on February 13, 2014, by Lalan Choudhary, a BPL worker in Lalu's cowshed, and Hridayanand Choudhary, a fourth grade railways employee. The third attached property is a 2.5 decimal plot of land "gifted" to Rabri by Lalan Choudhary, who had officially bought it for Rs 30 lakhs from a farmer.

According to the taxmen, the department has informed Rabri and Hema about the attachment and will now call them for further questioning.

"Prima facie, it was found that neither Lalan nor Hridayanand's income was so much that they could afford buying prime properties, let alone gifting it to someone else," a source said.

The I-T office in Patna has also written to the registrars in land registration offices in Patna and Danapur, requesting them to ensure that the properties do not change hands.

The said properties were first brought to public notice by senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi while "exposing" the alleged Rs 2,000 crore "Benami properties" of RJD President Lalu Yadav and his family members.

Modi had questioned why Hema was "gifted" land worth lakhs of rupees by a BPL card holder and a fourth-grade employee and sought a probe in the matter.
