At least 10 prisoners today made an attempt to free a gangster from the high security central jail here but their bid was foiled, the police said.

In their bid to free Gurpreet Singh Ladi, the inmates attacked the jail warden and had a scuffle with the deputy superintendent, they said.

They scaled a wall to reach Ladi who was lodged in block number 8. However, their attempt was foiled, the police said.

They attacked the jail warden. The accused also entered into a scuffle with the deputy jail superintendent when he along with jail guards tried to overpower them, the police said.

In the meantime, the jail alarm was sounded and the local police was alerted following which a team led by DSP Sukhvinder Singh reached the jail and brought the situation under control.

The police, however, did not say whether the 10 inmates were themselves trying to flee.

Ladi, who has 14 criminal cases pending against him, is serving a five-year term in the jail. The gangster yesterday himself tried to escape by jumping the security block wall after which he was lodged in a separate block.

Assistant Jail Superintendent Asha Nand said a complaint has been sent to city police for lodging an FIR against the accused.
