A young scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University committed suicide at his friend’s house rented accommodation, a few meters away from the varsity campus, at Munirka Vihar in Delhi on Sunday. The police claim that suicide happened off the campus, and are probing the circumstances leading to suicide. An inquest proceeding has been ordered and police is tight-lipped about the contents of suicide note. However, students in JNU are claiming that the deceased, who is a Dalit, committed suicide due to academic pressure. His social profile also states that he actively participated in the protest the government over University of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula's suicide in 2016.

Police however said that the suicide has nothing to do with the campus or any other issue.  But students in the campus states as per his last post on social networking site – Facebook -- is shocking where he talks about “equality is denied in the campus”.

According to the police the deceased student has been identified as Muthu Krishan, whose made profiles on social networking sites with a nickname Rajini Krish. He is doing M Phil from JNU and was resident of Jhelum Hostel.  The police said that Krishan is native of Selam in Tamil Nadu and also studied from University of Hyderabad.

Police said they received a call at police control room was received at 5.05 pm that one person locked himself in a room at H no 196, Munirka Vihar. “On reaching the spot police forced open the door and portion of latch was uprooted from inside. A young man aged about 25 years was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Crime team was called at the spot and scene was got inspected and photographed. Proceeding   U/s 174 CrPC are being carried out,” said a senior police officer.

The officer further said that on enquiry, deceased was found to be Krish (nickname), a student of M Phil JNU. “He had come to his friend’s house this afternoon to have food. He said he wanted to sleep and went to a room and locked himself in. Later his friends called him out and on getting no response, called police,” he said.

JNUSU president and also a member of Left student wing All India Students' Association (AISA) Mohit Pandey said, “Extremely shocked and sad on the demise of friend Rajini Krish. Met him yesterday. I knew him not only as an activist but also as a brilliant student coming from marginalised community. Great loss for all of us. Condolences to his family, relatives and friends.”

JNU administration, however, refrained to give any statement saying they are still trying to get more details about the "unfortunate" incident.

Reacting to the suicide, ABVP National Media Convenor Saket Bhaguna said, “Deeply saddened as Rajini Krishna, an M Phil scholar from Centre for Historical Studies, JNU, known to be a resident of Jhelum Hostel has allegedly committed suicide at his friend's residence in Munirka Vihar just outside JNU campus today.”

But however, some of the members from Left student organisations in the JNU started circulating messages that Krishna committed suicide as he was Dalit and was denied quality. They even circulated his last Facebook last post done on March 10 where he quotes a professor and writes, “When equality is denied everything is denied. There is no Equality in M.phil/phd Admission, there is no equality in Viva – voce, there is only denial of equality, denying professor Sukhadeo Thorat’s recommendation, denying Students protest places in Ad – block, denying the education of the Marginals.”

The police however clarified that so far there “nothing has been found regarding this incident to be having anything to do with the University”.
