The Madras High Court today accepted a CB-CID report that Dalit youth E Ilavarasan, found dead on a railway track in 2013 in Dharmapuri, had committed suicide.

Ilavarasan's marriage to N Divya, a girl belonging to another caste, had led to caste violence in Tamil Nadu in 2012.

Divya's father had committed suicide after she eloped with Ilavarasan.

In June 2013, when Divya's mother filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the court, she chose to go with her mother and got separated from Ilavarasan.

Subsequently, Ilavarasan was found dead on a railway track in Dharmapuri district on July 4, 2013.

In its report, CB-CID conclusively said Ilavarasan had committed suicide.

A bench of acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice R Mahadevan closed the case, saying no further orders were required.

Citing post-mortem reports backed by other evidence furnished by the investigating agency, the bench said it accepted the CB-CID's report.

The CB-CID report said autopsy of Ilavarasan's body found traces of alcohol. Also, enquiries with about 65 witnesses confirmed that he was under severe depression after Divya chose to go with her mother, it said.

Ilavarasan's death, which sparked a political debate of caste discrimination and violence, led to petitions being filed in the high court, claiming his death was suspicious.

Hence a second autopsy was done by doctors from Chennai in 2013 after the initial post-mortem at the Dharmapuri District Government General Hospital.

Later, forensic doctors from AIIMS, Delhi, performed the third post-mortem on orders of the Madras High Court.
