The body of a Haryana folk singer was found with her throat slit in a field in Rohtak’s Baniyani village late Thursday.

The singer was identified as 40-year-old Mamta Sharma who performed at religious gatherings. According to the police, she was murdered and her body was dumped in the field.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the body was discovered by villagers. Incidentally, Baniyani is also the hometown of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Sharma’s son while speaking to ANI said that she had gone to attend an event on January 14 with her associate Mohit Kumar, but did not return following which they filed a complaint at the Kalanaur police station.

According to reports, Kumar said that while on their way, they came across a car at Lahli village. Sharma joined the occupants of the car, saying she was going with her friend to Kalanaur and would join them back in Gohana after an hour.

That was the last anyone saw her until her body was recovered.

The victim’s husband said that his wife was a folk singer, who used to sing at religious events and had no animosity with anyone.

The police have sent her body for postmortem and are investigating the matter to nab the accused.

Haryana has witnessed a number of atrocities against women, including gang-rapes and murders in the past week. The opposition Congress has been after Chief Minister Khattar for not being able to control the law and order situation in the state.
