The Union government is trying to revive seven sea-going ship repair facilities in the country and has asked Cochin Shipyard to construct a model for cooperation with the ports in this regard.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ICC-organised coastal shipping seminar, he said that the seven ship-repair sites identified in existing ports include Pandu in Assam, Mumbai, Khandla and Goa.
The government aims to have modern ship-repair facilities in ports which are either defunct or do not have adequate infrastructure to carry out such activity properly.
The Cochin Shipyard, which has extensive ship-repair domain knowledge, will initiate a dialouge with the ports and will prepare a model for cooperation.
"The exact nature of cooperation between the CSL and ports will have to be worked out," Agarwal said.
Asked whether the government would offer fiscal assistance under Sagarmala project, Agarwal said, "There are clear guidelines for seeking funds under Sagarmala and these projects can be considered."
Under the coastal shipping policy, the government is trying to construct ship-repair facilities, but those will be for riverine vessels, according to Agarwal.
The modernisation of a Kolkata ship repair facility has been finalised and the feasibility for setting up a repair project in Farakka has been been carried out.
