The Centre has started the process of identifying 9,280 'enemy properties' whose subsequent auction could fetch over Rs 1 lakh crore to the exchequer.

Sources in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the government has initiated the process of surveying and identifying all such properties which were left behind by people who took citizenship of Pakistan and China.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh who recently reviewed the exercise was informed that a survey of 6,289 enemy properties has been completed and for the rest 2,991 properties will be completed soon.

The move became possible following the amendment of the 49-year-old Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Act, which ensured that the heirs of those who migrated to Pakistan and China during Partition and afterwards will have no claim over the properties left behind.

Earlier, the Congress-led UPA government had promulgated an ordinance in 2010 to expand the power of the custodian of the enemy properties who was deemed a mere administrator by the Supreme Court.

While Uttar Pradesh has 4,991 properties and West Bengal has 2,735 such properties, Delhi is in tow with 487 properties, Goa with 263, Andhra Pradesh with 159 and Gujarat with 146. Of the 126 properties left behind by Chinese nationals, the highest - 57 - are located in Meghalaya followed by West Bengal with 29.

The Kishori Court - near the Worli end of the Sealink - and Sorab House in Colaba in Mumbai, Qila Mahmudabad in UP belonging to the erstwhile Raja of Mahmudabad and the Flagstaff House in Bhopal are considered to be some of the most high-profile enemy properties that can fetch huge prices in auction.

These immovable properties including 11,882 acre of land belonging to people who migrated to Pakistan after partition as well as during 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars.
