The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s dream to establish an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in his hometown Gorakhpur finally saw the light of the day as his government transferred 112 acres of land to the Centre on Wednesday.

The registry of 112 acres of land, belonging to Sugarcane Research Centre, was done in Gorakhpur on Wednesday in favour of the Central government. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid foundation stone for AIIMS at this land in 2016. Since then transfer of land was biting dust in files.

Since 2014, Adityanah has been advocating AIIMS in Gorakhpur for the benefit of patients of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Initially, Akhilesh government had denied availability of land but when the Prime Minister personally spoke to him, he had agreed to earmark 112 acres of land.

The land was transferred to the State Medical Education Department by the Sugarcane Research Institute about five months ago. But due to Assembly polls, it could not be transferred to the Central government.

On the directions of the Chief Minister, the Secretary State Medical Education Department N.K. Singh got the registry done in favour of Union Health and Family Welfare ministry in the presence of its Secretary Vinod Kumar.

The land, situated at Kudaghat in Gorakhpur, was finally registered in the name of the Central government on a renewable lease for 90 years at the rate of Rs 1 annually with a rider that the land will not be used for any other purposes than for the construction of AIIMS.

The market value of the leased land is about Rs 700 crores. The Adityanath government has also waived the stamp duty to the tune of Rs 35 crores for the transfer of the land to the Centre.
