The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai customs are on the lookout for a suspect after they found 2 kg of gold bars and jewellery, collectively worth Rs 70 lakh, in a dustbin in a washroom at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport around 12.30 am on Wednesday. AIU officials said the gold was seized as there was sufficient proof of it being illegally smuggled into the country.
AIU officials said they examined CCTV footage of the airport, which helped them find vital clues about the suspects.
According to AIU officers, the gold, wrapped in black tape, was recovered from the dustbin of the gents washroom opposite conveyor belt number 5. The gold was found in the form of assorted jewellery weighing 1.3 kg and nine gold bars bearing foreign markings, collectively weighing 1 kg. The gold is collectively worth Rs 70.65 lakh.
"We have identified four passengers whom we suspect and have summoned them for inquiry. As far is the gold is concerned, it might have been brought into the country from Singapore or Bangkok. Our probe is also on if any Airport ground staff is involved in it," said AIU official.
