Going to school will soon be fun and exciting for nearly 50 students from the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district. The children, who are required to trek or walk between four and 12km everyday, are set to get bicycles by next week, thanks to an initiative by a Pune-based Ganesh mandal.

Adarsh Mitra Mandal with the help from Rotary Club of Pune Katraj and Sri Laxmi Nrusinh Urban Cooperative Credit Society, Ballarpur, will also provide school bags and shoes to the tribal kids.

Uday Jagtap, executive president of Adarsh Mitra Mandal, said they have got the permission from the Gadchiroli superintendent of police to supply the cycles and kits and have received the list of 50 students.

"These students are from four zilla parishad schools in Gadchiroli district. They are facing a huge problem since their schools are located between four to 12km from their hamlets. That's why we've decided to donate bicycles, each costing about Rs3,500," said Jagtap.

He said that the Rotary Club of Pune Katraj is providing 40 cycles, while the Mandal is giving ten along with school bags and shoes.

Suvarna Kutwal, the president elect of Rotary Club of Pune Katraj, who would be assuming charge in July is elated. She said that Rotary International had decided to undertake TEACH programme, and for India, 100 per cent literacy by 2020 was their target. "That is why we decided to chip in for the initiative by Adarsh Mitra Mandal. The cycles would reach Gadchiroli on July 6. All the 50 children will no longer need to walk long distances reach school anymore."

Adarsh Mitra Mandal has been undertaking various initiatives to help convicts acquire vocational skills so that they earn a livelihood after coming out of jail. It is also conducting counselling sessions for slum kids and drug addicts in various slum pockets in Pune. This is for the first time the Mandal is expanding its work outside Pune.
