In an attempt to get Americans better acquainted with Gandhian thoughts, philosophies, and lifestyle; the Gandhian Society in the USA plans to hold a massive exhibition spread over 40,000 to 50,000 square feet in New Jersey on August 18 and 19. It will have an interactive museum, workshops and khadi expo too.

The two-day exhibition titled Gandhi Going Global will be set up with the help of  Gandhi Ashram, Gujarat Vidyapith, Navjivan Press in Ahmedabad and the Gandhi Research Foundation, Jalgaon. The organisers are also trying to rope in former First Lady Michelle Obama to deliver a keynote address.

The ashram will be providing replicas of memorabilia that will be part of the exhibition. Institutions like King's Centre, Nelson Mandela Foundation, and Gandhi Ashram, South Africa will also be participating with their collection.

"The exhibition is part of the celebrations leading up to the 150th anniversary of Gandhi Jayanti. The idea is to ensure that Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts, philosophies, and lifestyle is available to Americans in a contemporary way," said Dhiren Parikh, a volunteer with Gandhian Society

The society was set up in the US by non-resident Indians to promote Gandhi's values in the US.

Another interesting aspect of the exhibition is that following the two-day event, the exhibition will travel to six different universities in the US. "The exhibition will have six individual modules, each of which can be dismantled and given as an individual exhibition to universities. One module will stay at one university for a given period of time and then will be replaced by a second module," said Kartikeya Sarabhai, trustee, Gandhi Ashram.

The society also plans to take the initiatives to over 100 schools in the US. "The idea is not just to tell them of the history but the concept of non-violence too. We need to ask what can we do by way of education that children grow up to be non-violent. Academic programmes with workshops are also part of the plan. It will also display the relevance of Gandhian thoughts in today's time," said Sarabhai.

The society will also be felicitating Martin Luther King III, son for Martin Luther King Jr for his work at the event which will have a keynote address by Sam Pitroda and Ela Bhatt, founder of Sewa.
