The Goa government today said the possibility of categorising monkey as a vermin was not ruled out since the animal "finished the crop before hand." Goa Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai informed the assembly in response to a question in this regard.

"Even if you use good varieties for yield, the monkeys finish the crop before hand. Providing support price to the farmers is not a solution. It is a big issue in rural areas," Sardesai said responding to a question on the floor of the House.

The Goa government has been receiving several memorandums from farmers complaining about destruction to their crop by monkeys. They had demanded that the animal be declared as vermin, said the minister.

"I think the government is on its way to take a conclusive step in this regard. The Chief Minister has thought about it," he said replying to a question by independent legislator Prasad Gaonkar.
