While the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) decision to appoint Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has been roundly criticised by rival parties, he found support in an unlikely quarter— Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle Ram Gopal Yadav. Ram Gopal hit out at critics stating that it was unfair to criticise Yogi Adityanath from day one and that he should be given six months to prove his worth.

India Today quoted him as saying: "There is no need to start attacking him from the first day.” Ram Gopal also defended Adityanath for holding a puja at the CM’s residence before entering it, saying: “Doing puja is a normal practise in Hindu tradition before starting on a new project.”

Earlier, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP had also came out in support of Adityanath. Denouncing criticism of Adityanath's elevation to the post of UP CM, TMC Vice President and MP Sultan Ahmed said that in a democracy both Yogi and Maulvi have the right to hold political and constitutional office, if democratically elected.

"It is wrong to criticise Yogi Adityanath's elevation to the post of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. Other political parties can't criticise his elevation as he has been democratically chosen by the elected BJP MLAs. BJP has got the majority and it is their prerogative to decide who will be the Chief Minister," Sultan Ahmed told PTI.

Adityanath, BJP's hardline Hindutva mascot, took over as UP CM with the promise of working for all sections of society without any discrimination. The 44-year-old was sworn-in as the 21st Chief Minister of the country's largest state. He vowed to pursue the agenda of 'sabka sath, sabka vikas' (cooperation to all, development for all).

Several political parties have criticised Adityanath's elevation to the post of Chief Minister. TMC has been a vociferous supporter of the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance in Uttar Pradesh ahead of elections and had termed BJP as a "communal outfit" which reaps political dividends by dividing people on religious lines.

Naidu slams opposition for criticising Yogi Adityanath

Lashing out at the opposition for criticising the appointment of Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday told ANI that the former would serve all sections of the society without any discrimination.

"I am surprised that a few people are opposing the appointment of Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister. He said on the very first day ‘sabka sath, sabka vikas’. Modi has defied the caste, religion and region and same thing will be done by Yogi Adityanath. He will take care of all sections of the people and he will see to it that UP develops in a faster manner and along with the country," the Union Minister said.

Naidu further said that the newly elected Chief Minister will prove the critics wrong with his dedication and work.

"People have given him mandate to work with Modi and that’s what Yogi is going to do. He will become one of the most successful Chief Ministers of UP," he said.

The Union Minister also took to the occasion to assert said that there is no pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Adityanath. "All these speculations and criticism of some of the parties are claiming that there is RSS pressure and BJP pressure but there is no pressure at all. He was elected by the MLAs and selected by the party. We discussed together and I was the observer," he asserted.
