A 53-year-old German national was beaten up by a man she made friend with on Facebook after she came to India to meet him. The event came to light after she shared her ordeal  on the social networking site and a former Indian Coast Guard Commandant came to her aid, and got the abuser arrested, Mid Day reported.

In her complaint, the woman, who is half-Indian and lives in Berlin, she made friends with the accused Amano Khambato alias Jamshed Khambata, who lives in Churchgate, two years ago. He had introduced himself on Facebook saying he knew two of her cousins. “They soon developed a friendship and when he invited her to Mumbai, she accepted,” the report added.

The woman arrived in Mumbai on March 5 and Khambata took her straight to his flat where he allegedly tried misbehaving with her. When she resisted, he told her to pay for the electricity, food and stay. She then gave him 50 euros.

Two days later, the accused started assaulting her and beating her up, which is when she shared her message on Facebook asking for him.

It was then that Dinesh Chauhan, a former coast guard commandant got in touch with her and told her to meet him. When the woman told Khambata she wanted to leave, he put a knife at her throat and threatened to kill her. “The next day he demanded money and when I refused, he pulled me by my hair and threatened to throw me out the window,” the woman alleged.

The woman then contacted Dinesh and when Khambata found out, he threw her and her belongings out of the house. The woman then contacted Chauhan using the security guard’s telephone, the Mid-Day report added.

Through multiple shares on Facebook, Chauhan chanced upon it late March 7. Although it was late, he contacted the woman and sent his phone number. He then called the police helpline, who in turn told him to reach the woman’s location. She called me from the security guard’s phone and the police and I reached the spot. She was brought to the Marine Lines police station and a FIR was lodged. Khambata was arrested on Friday and brought before court.

In addition, the German consulate has told the woman that they will help her with all the paperwork in case she wants to go back to Germany. She has a ticket to fly back on April 5, but has nowhere to stay at the moment.

Interestingly, Khambata has a history of violence, with a case registered against him for assaulting his mother. He has been remanded in police custody till March 12.
